The Abhidharma teachings are like a matrix for all important aspects of the path to awakening. According to Asanga, one of the most important masters and authors of Mahayana Buddhism, the Abhidharma teachings are about: a) how to understand the highest goal and the nature of reality, b) the path from various perspectives, c) answering various questions that may arise, and d) penetrating into the deepest meaning of the Buddha Dharma. In short, the Abhidharma helps us to reflect our experiences and perception which occur in a samsaric states of mind that is conditioned by afflictions and karma. Based on this, we can understand how it is possible to gradually overcome these conditionings and find access to the nature of reality. The Buddha taught these teachings in various sutras. Later generations of his disciples have collected them systematically providing a kind of map of the path to awakening. They did so probably with the intention to make the Buddha’s wisdom accessible. The course will be held on the basis of Mipham Rinpoche’s Gateway to Knowledge, with a particular focus on chapter 2 and 3, the elements and the sense sources. There will be explanations on these topics, i.e., the elements and sense sources, with a focus on contemplation and exchange.

Dr. Tina Draszczyk is a teacher of Buddhism and mindfulness, translator, and she holds a PhD in Buddhist Studies and Tibetology. She began practicing Buddhism in the late 1970s, among others under the guidance of Shamar Rinpoche. She teaches at the Vienna Karma Kagyu Centre. She deepened her Buddhist studies and translation activity at the K.I.B.I. (Karmapa International Buddhist Institute). She received the title of Acharya. Shamar Rinpoche recommended her as a teacher of the Bodhi Path Centres mainly because of her vast knowledge of Buddhist philosophy.
